Queer Justice
1st Semester
My something new non-textual plays with the idea that identity is not something you choose for yourself, rather it is the thoughts and ideas that others have about you that make up who you are and how you perceive yourself.
2nd Semester:
My something new non-textual for this semester comes from the combination of two things from class. The first is the bird cage metaphor that was presented in Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow where each wire of the birdcage works together to keep the subject contained, even if alone it would not function as such. The second part is a quote from Dr. Pyle where he said, “Some people make a home out of the bird cage, some people try to escape.” This is what gave me the idea to make the double sided wall of the cage in place of where the door would normally be. While no door is actually in place, the systems of oppression keep the oppressed locked away inside while making it seem as though these systems of oppression are simply the way life is. The back of the cage is broken to show that there is a way out, you just have to be brave enough to take action and take the leap.
