Queer Justice
Hi! I’m Riley Light, I’m from Kennesaw, Georgia and I am a first year at Davidson College. My portfolios theme is Queer Justice, and this theme came to me when I wrote a paper for my theater class. We had just read a script for the show Angels in America, a show that takes place during the AIDS epidemic and centers around two couples who are coming to terms with their identities. One of the things we had to write about in the paper was how we connected ourselves to the character. In the first several weeks at Davidson, I got bombarded with questions like, “Oh, what gender are you attracted to?” or more often just, “Are you gay?”. This openess was new to me and I didn’t love it as it wasn’t what I was used to, but after sitting down and writing my theater paper I came to realize I wanted to come to better terms with my identity which led me to center my portfolio around queerness.
